If you are searching for the best criminal lawyer Singapore has to offer in 2026, you are almost certainly searching at one of the most stressful moments of your life, whether it is for yourself, your child or a family member. So let me start with the single most important thing I learned researching this guide: a good criminal lawyer never guarantees an outcome. If anyone you speak to promises you an acquittal, a discharge or a specific sentence, walk away. The honest ones tell you the range of realistic outcomes and then fight hard inside it.

I am a Singapore web designer, not a lawyer, and I want to be upfront about that. My authority here is research and the unusual vantage point I get from building and studying websites for professional-services firms across Singapore. I see how these practices present themselves, how clearly they explain their work, and how seriously they treat the people who land on their site at the worst possible time. That is the lens I am using.

What actually matters in this field is experience across the State Courts and the High Court, a real understanding of how the system works, and knowing the support that exists, including the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS) for those who cannot afford representation. You will notice many of the strongest names below are former Deputy Public Prosecutors, people who used to run cases for the prosecution and now defend. For a wider view of the legal market see my best law firms in Singapore guide, and if your matter is a family one read my best divorce lawyers guide instead. Here are the nine criminal practices I would look at first.

What I look for in a criminal lawyer in Singapore

Choosing a criminal lawyer is not like choosing a conveyancing firm where the work is fairly standard. The stakes are your liberty and your record, and the right fit depends heavily on the type of charge you are facing. These are the five things I would weigh before engaging anyone.

  1. Real court experience, State Courts and High Court. Most criminal matters start in the State Courts, but the more serious ones move up to the High Court. You want a lawyer who has actually argued cases in the relevant forum, not someone who mostly settles paperwork and rarely stands up to cross-examine.
  2. Honesty about outcomes, and no guarantees. The lawyers worth hiring give you a frank read on your realistic options and risks. Anyone guaranteeing a result is either inexperienced or selling you something, because no lawyer controls a judge or a prosecutor.
  3. Responsiveness. Criminal matters move on the system's timetable, not yours. Bail, charges, mentions and deadlines do not wait, so you want a lawyer or a team that actually picks up and replies when something urgent lands.
  4. Clear, scoped fees. Good criminal lawyers tell you what is included, what is not, and what happens to the fee if a plea of guilt turns into a trial. A written fee scope up front protects both sides.
  5. The right specialism for your charge. White-collar and corporate fraud, drug offences, traffic and drink-driving, sexual offences and violence are all different worlds. Match the lawyer's strongest area to the charge you actually face.

1. Eugene Thuraisingam LLP

I am putting Eugene Thuraisingam LLP first because the firm embodies the differentiator that runs through this whole guide: serious courtroom experience paired with intellectual honesty about what a case can and cannot achieve. This is a boutique disputes and criminal practice known for taking on hard, high-stakes and constitutional matters, the kind of work that demands a lawyer comfortable arguing all the way up to the highest courts rather than one who simply processes pleas.

Best for
White-collar, serious and constitutional criminal matters that need a true trial advocate
Location
The Adelphi, 1 Coleman Street
Recognised by
Benchmark Litigation, Tier 1 for White Collar Crime

2. Gloria James-Civetta & Co

Gloria James-Civetta & Co is one of the more accessible names for someone who wants senior experience without feeling shut out by a giant firm. The founder brings around twenty-nine years of practice, including matters taken to the Court of Appeal, and has been profiled in Benchmark Litigation, so the courtroom credentials are there for both criminal and family work.

Best for
Accessible, senior-led criminal and family defence, including for foreigners
Location
Samsung Hub, 3 Church Street
Recognised by
Profiled in Benchmark Litigation; founder with ~29 years' experience to the Court of Appeal; on several embassy panels
Website
gjclaw.com.sg

3. Tembusu Law LLC

Tembusu Law is the pick I would point most people toward for everyday criminal defence. It is a well-known criminal and family practice that has built a large public review footprint, and a heavily reviewed firm in this space usually means a steady stream of real clients who came out feeling they were looked after through a frightening process.

Best for
Well-reviewed, approachable everyday criminal defence
Location
The Riverside Piazza, 11 Keng Cheow Street
Recognised by
A heavily reviewed criminal and family practice
Website
tembusulaw.com

4. I.R.B. Law LLP

I.R.B. Law is the name I would raise for anyone worried about cost. It is a large, full-service firm built around the idea of making legal help more affordable and accessible, and crucially it runs a dedicated criminal group within that bigger structure, so you get specialist criminal lawyers backed by a sizeable firm.

Best for
Affordable, properly resourced criminal representation
Location
119 Jalan Sultan
Recognised by
A large, affordable full-service firm with a dedicated criminal group
Website
irblaw.com.sg

5. Kalidass Law Corporation

Kalidass Law Corporation is a boutique criminal specialist, and that focus is exactly why it is here. The founder brings more than twenty-four years to criminal defence, and a practice built around one area of law tends to read the system, the prosecutors and the likely outcomes more sharply than a generalist who dabbles in crime between property deals.

Best for
A dedicated, specialist criminal practice
Location
City Hall area
Recognised by
Boutique criminal specialist, 24+ years; free initial consultation
Website
daslaw.com.sg

6. Invictus Law Corporation

Invictus Law Corporation, founded by Josephus Tan, stands out for a culture rather than a single statistic. The firm and its founder are well known for substantial pro-bono work, which tells you something about how it views criminal defence: as a service to people in trouble, not only a transaction. That ethos tends to show up in how clients are treated.

Best for
Criminal defence with a strong pro-bono ethos
Location
Havelock area
Recognised by
Founded by Josephus Tan, well known for pro-bono work
Website
invictuslaw.sg

7. Edmond Pereira Law Corporation

Edmond Pereira Law Corporation is a standout for sheer depth of system experience. The founder is a former Deputy Public Prosecutor and a former District Judge, which is an unusual combination. Having sat on both the prosecution side and the bench means he has seen how cases are built, argued and decided from angles most defence lawyers never get.

Best for
Deep prosecutorial and judicial experience
Location
Cecil Court, 138 Cecil Street
Recognised by
Founder is a former Deputy Public Prosecutor and former District Judge
Website
epplaw.com.sg

8. Foo Cheow Ming Chambers

Foo Cheow Ming Chambers is built squarely for serious and complex criminal work. The founder is a former Deputy Public Prosecutor, so the firm carries that ex-prosecution insight into how charges are framed and pursued, which is exactly the kind of experience I flagged as a strong signal at the top of this guide.

Best for
Serious and complex criminal matters
Location
Tiong Bahru area
Recognised by
Founder is a former Deputy Public Prosecutor and on the ICC List of Counsel

9. Ray Louis Law Corporation

Ray Louis Law Corporation rounds out the list as a strongly reviewed, approachable choice. The founder is among the most-reviewed lawyers on SingaporeLegalAdvice.com, and in a field where most people are choosing a lawyer blind and frightened, that volume of public feedback is genuinely reassuring.

Best for
Well-reviewed criminal and accident matters
Location
People's Park Centre
Recognised by
Among the most-reviewed lawyers on SingaporeLegalAdvice.com

How much does a criminal lawyer cost in Singapore?

Criminal defence fees in Singapore vary more than almost any other area of legal work, because the cost is driven by what actually happens to your case. A guilty plea handled in a morning is a fraction of the cost of a contested trial that runs for days with witnesses. These are broad 2026 indications, not quotes.

MatterIndicative fee (2026)
Initial consultationFree–S$500
Police investigation / representation (pre-charge)from S$3,000
Plea of guilt (State Courts)S$5,000–15,000
Claimed trial (State Courts)S$20,000–50,000+
High Court matterS$50,000+

Treat these as starting reference points only. Fees swing hugely with the complexity of the charge, the volume of evidence, the number of days in court and the seniority of the lawyer, so the same charge can cost very different amounts at two firms. Always ask for a written fee scope that spells out what is included and what happens if a plea turns into a trial. And if you genuinely cannot afford a lawyer, do not assume you have no options. The Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS) provides representation for those who qualify, which I cover in more detail below.

What is the difference between the State Courts and the High Court?

In simple terms, it is about the seriousness of the offence. The State Courts handle the large majority of criminal cases in Singapore, the everyday and mid-range charges, and they have limits on the sentences they can impose. The more serious offences, and matters that carry the heaviest penalties, are dealt with in the High Court, which has wider sentencing powers and hears the gravest cases. Appeals also move upward through the system. This is why courtroom experience in the relevant forum matters so much: a lawyer who is at home in the High Court on a grave charge is a different proposition to one who mostly handles routine State Courts mentions, and you want the experience matched to where your case will actually be heard.

Can I get free or subsidised criminal representation in Singapore?

Yes, potentially. The Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS), run through the Law Society's Pro Bono Services, exists to provide legal representation in non-capital criminal matters for people who cannot afford a lawyer. It is subject to a means test, to check you genuinely qualify financially, and a merits test that looks at the case itself. CLAS is the reason no one facing a non-capital charge should simply give up on representation because of money. If you think you may qualify, look into CLAS early rather than waiting, because the criminal timetable does not pause while you sort out funding. It is one of the most important parts of the system that the public knows the least about.

Should I speak to the police without a lawyer?

This is a decision only you can make, and nothing here is legal advice, but the general principle is to be careful. What you say to the police can be recorded and used, and it is very easy to say something unhelpful when you are frightened, tired or trying to be cooperative. Many people benefit from getting legal advice as early as possible, ideally before or as soon as they are aware they are under investigation, so they understand their rights and obligations before answering questions. Several of the firms above offer a free or low-cost initial consultation precisely so you can get an early read. If you are unsure, the safest move is usually to seek advice promptly rather than to assume you have to navigate it alone.

What should I look for in a criminal defence lawyer?

Start with experience in the right forum and on the right type of charge, then weigh honesty, responsiveness and clear fees. The single biggest red flag is a guarantee: no lawyer can promise the outcome of a criminal case, so a confident but realistic assessment of your options is worth far more than a promise of victory. A former Deputy Public Prosecutor background is a strong signal because that lawyer understands how the prosecution thinks. Beyond that, you want someone who replies when it matters, explains your position in plain language, and is upfront about what their fee covers. Trust your read of the first conversation too. You are going to be working closely with this person through a stressful process, so a lawyer who listens and is straight with you counts for a lot.

That is my research-led run-down of the best criminal lawyer Singapore options I would look at in 2026. If I had to compress the whole guide into one sentence: hire experience, prize honesty, and run from anyone who guarantees you a result. The firms above span the full range, from boutique trial advocates for the gravest matters to affordable, well-reviewed practices for the everyday charges that upend ordinary lives, and the right choice depends on your specific charge and budget. And if money is the barrier, remember that CLAS exists.

One honest disclosure about my own side of the table. I am not a lawyer, I am a web designer, and I build websites for professional-services firms in Singapore. If you run a practice and your site is not turning searches like this one into enquiries, you might find my notes on a strong law firm website useful, or take a look at my websites for law firms and free quote. None of the firms above is a client of mine.

Editorial note: This guide reflects my own research and opinion, not legal advice. I am a Singapore web designer, not a lawyer. No lawyer can guarantee the outcome of a criminal case. Firm details were accurate at the time of writing (last updated June 2026) but can change. Always verify a lawyer is currently practising before engaging them.
