Divorce is one of those things nobody plans for. But when it happens, the first thing you need is a good lawyer. Someone who knows the Singapore family court system inside out, fights for your interests without dragging things out unnecessarily, and does not charge you into bankruptcy along the way.

I spent a good few weeks researching the best divorce lawyers in Singapore for 2026, cross-referencing Doyle's Guide and Straits Times Best Law Firms rankings, Google review volume and consistency, fee transparency, and what former clients actually say across legal directories and forums. Some firms look polished online but the reviews tell a different story. Others are understated yet consistently get the job done. This list is built on what holds up across all of those signals, not on marketing.

For this instalment of Terris Recommends, I researched the best divorce lawyers in Singapore for 2026. Whether you are going through an uncontested split, a contested custody battle, or a high-net-worth asset division, this list covers firms for every situation and budget.

What I look for in a divorce lawyer in Singapore

Before jumping into the list, here is how I evaluate these firms. My criteria come from comparing how they actually perform: what their clients say, how they price, and whether their track record holds up beyond the marketing.

  1. Track record in family law. Divorce law is its own world. I look for firms where family and matrimonial law is a core practice area, not a side offering tucked between corporate and conveyancing work, with real case volume at the Family Justice Courts.
  2. Client reviews and reputation. Google reviews, testimonials on SingaporeLegalAdvice.com, Doyle's Guide rankings, and Straits Times Best Law Firms recognition. Volume matters, but so does consistency.
  3. Transparent pricing. Divorce is stressful enough without surprise bills. I favour firms that publish their fees, offer fixed-fee packages, or at least provide clear estimates upfront. The Law Society of Singapore also publishes guidance on what lawyers can and cannot charge for.
  4. Communication and responsiveness. Does the firm respond promptly? Do they explain things in plain language? Can you reach them outside office hours? These details matter when your personal life is falling apart.
  5. Specialisation within family law. Some firms excel at mediation. Others thrive in contested hearings. Matching the firm to your situation is more important than picking the "best" name.

One more thing: before engaging any firm, verify the lawyer holds a valid practising certificate on the Legal Services Regulatory Authority register. It takes two minutes and confirms you are dealing with a lawyer in good standing, not just a polished website.

Here is how the ten firms compare before we get into the detail. Fees shown are for an uncontested divorce, which is the number most firms publish.

So who is the best divorce lawyer in Singapore?

For most people, A.W. Law is my top pick overall thanks to its flat-fee pricing and strong contested track record, while PKWA Law is the safest large-firm choice and Populus Law is the best value for a simple uncontested divorce. The right firm ultimately depends on your situation, so here is who I would call for each one.

  • Best overall and best for a contested divorce: A.W. Law, for its flat-fee pricing, long daily hours, and strong contested track record.
  • Most reviewed and safest large-firm choice: PKWA Law, with 3,900+ Google reviews and six straight years on the Straits Times Best list.
  • Best for high-conflict cases: Gloria James-Civetta & Co.
  • Best for high-net-worth and complex assets: Harry Elias Partnership.
  • Best value for a simple uncontested divorce: Populus Law, from S$875 nett.
  • Best for mediation and an amicable split: Integro Law Chambers.
  • Best for a Muslim or Syariah divorce: A.W. Law, or a dedicated specialist from my guide to the best Syariah divorce lawyers in Singapore.

The rest of this guide explains why each firm earns its place, plus the fees, timelines, and the parts of the divorce process most listicles skip.

1. A.W. Law

A.W. Law kept surfacing as I dug into contested divorce outcomes, and what stood out was not the marketing. It was the substance behind it. A 90% success rate for contested divorces is a bold claim, and they back it up with over 500 satisfied clients and 200+ positive reviews across Google and SingaporeLegalAdvice.com.

The firm is led by Abdul Wahab, who graduated from the University of Leeds in 2013 and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2015. A.W. Law handles both civil and Syariah divorce proceedings, which makes them one of the few firms on this list that covers both systems. They deal with everything from uncontested splits and child custody to contested asset division and maintenance claims. Their hours run from 9am to 10pm daily, which is rare for a law firm and genuinely useful when you need advice outside normal working hours.

What sets A.W. Law apart is their pricing model. They offer flat fees with no hidden costs, and they provide instalment plans for clients who need financial flexibility. Their team, including Mr Wahab and his team lead Leela, consistently receives praise for being patient, meticulous, and easy to communicate with. If you want a divorce lawyer in Singapore who combines strong results with a genuinely client-first approach, this is my top pick.

6. Yuen Law LLC

7. Eden Law Corporation

June Lim founded Eden Law with a mission that sets her apart from most divorce lawyers in Singapore: a low bono pricing model. That means her fees are designed for middle-class families who cannot afford premium rates but do not qualify for pro bono legal aid. It is a gap in the market that surprisingly few firms address, and June fills it well.

If you are searching for an affordable divorce lawyer in Singapore and your case is straightforward, Populus Law offers the most budget-friendly option on this list. Their uncontested divorce packages start from $875 nett for an online filing, inclusive of court filing fees, GST, and disbursements. For a physical filing, that goes up to $1,150 nett. Those are prices that most other firms simply cannot match.

How I put this list together

A quick note on method, because a list like this is only as good as the research behind it. I started with every firm that appears across Doyle's Guide, the Straits Times Best Law Firms rankings, and the major legal directories, then cross-referenced each one against Google review volume and consistency, published pricing, and what former clients actually describe in their reviews, not just the star count.

Google ratings matter, but I weight consistency and specificity more heavily than raw volume. A firm with 40 detailed reviews describing the same strengths tells me more than a thousand one-line five-stars. I also checked that every firm listed has family law as a genuine core practice and that its lawyers are in good standing. I update this list when fees, rankings, or my recommendations change.

How much does a divorce lawyer cost in Singapore?

Divorce lawyer fees in Singapore vary significantly depending on whether your case is contested or uncontested.

For an uncontested divorce (where both parties agree on the divorce and ancillary matters like custody, maintenance, and asset division), most firms charge between $1,200 and $3,500 in fixed fees. The most affordable option on this list, Populus Law, starts from $875 nett. On the higher end, firms with more established reputations charge $2,500 to $3,500 for the same type of case.

For a contested divorce (where there are disputes over custody, maintenance, asset division, or the grounds for divorce), costs climb significantly. Expect to pay between $10,000 and $35,000, depending on how complex and drawn-out the proceedings become. Hourly rates for divorce lawyers in Singapore typically fall between $350 and $900 per hour.

Court filing fees are separate but relatively modest. The filing fee for a divorce originating summons is around $500 for uncontested cases and can reach $3,000 to $5,000 for contested cases.

Cost itemTypical range
Uncontested divorce (budget online filing)S$875 to S$1,500
Uncontested divorce (standard fixed fee)S$1,200 to S$3,500
Contested divorceS$10,000 to S$35,000+
Hourly ratesS$350 to S$900 per hour
Court filing fees (uncontested)~S$500
Court filing fees (contested)S$3,000 to S$5,000

My advice: always ask for a written fee estimate before engaging any firm. The better firms on this list, like A.W. Law, PKWA, and Populus Law, publish their fees upfront or provide fixed-fee packages. That transparency removes a major source of stress during an already difficult time.

How long does a divorce take in Singapore?

An uncontested divorce in Singapore typically takes 4 to 6 months from the date of filing to the Final Judgement. Here is the general timeline:

  1. Filing the Writ of Divorce: Your lawyer prepares and files the documents with the Family Justice Courts.
  2. Interim Judgement: If both parties agree on all terms, the court grants an Interim Judgement, usually within 1 to 3 months of filing.
  3. Final Judgement: Three months after the Interim Judgement, the divorce is finalised. This waiting period is mandatory under Singapore law.

A contested divorce takes significantly longer, often 12 months or more. If ancillary matters (custody, asset division, maintenance) are disputed, each issue may require separate hearings. Complex cases involving asset tracing across jurisdictions or contested custody arrangements can stretch beyond two years.

The speed of your case depends heavily on how cooperative both parties are and how efficiently your lawyer prepares the documentation. Having a good divorce lawyer can genuinely shorten the timeline by getting the paperwork right the first time and negotiating effectively with the other side.

What are the grounds for divorce in Singapore?

Singapore has only one legal ground for divorce: that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. You prove that in one of a limited number of ways set out in the Women's Charter.

Traditionally there were five facts you could rely on:

  • Adultery that you find intolerable to live with.
  • Unreasonable behaviour by your spouse.
  • Desertion for at least two years.
  • Separation for three years with your spouse's consent.
  • Separation for four years without consent.

Since 1 July 2024, there is a sixth option: divorce by mutual agreement (DMA). Couples can now jointly state that the marriage has broken down irretrievably, without either side having to blame the other. It is designed to reduce hostility, and a good lawyer will tell you quickly whether DMA fits your situation. Note also the three-year rule: you generally cannot file for divorce within the first three years of marriage, except in cases of exceptional hardship.

How are matrimonial assets divided in a Singapore divorce?

Singapore does not split assets 50/50 by default. The Family Justice Courts divide matrimonial assets in a way that is just and equitable, which means the final split depends on the facts of your marriage rather than a fixed formula.

The court weighs both direct contributions (who paid for what, in cash) and indirect contributions (homemaking, raising children, supporting the other spouse's career). This is why a stay-at-home parent can still receive a substantial share without a salaried income, and the longer the marriage, the more weight indirect contributions tend to carry.

The matrimonial home is usually the largest asset in play, and how it is handled, sold, transferred, or retained, often drives the whole negotiation. If your split involves selling or transferring property, you will also need a conveyancing lawyer; see my guide to the best conveyancing lawyers in Singapore. For Muslim couples, asset division follows different principles under Syariah law, which I cover in my guide to the best Muslim matrimonial asset lawyers.

Who gets custody of the children in a Singapore divorce?

This is the question that worries parents most, and the answer is guided by a single principle: the welfare of the child comes first, above what either parent wants.

Singapore separates two ideas that people often confuse. Custody covers major long-term decisions (education, religion, serious medical choices), and courts most often grant joint custody so both parents stay involved. Care and control is about who the child lives with day to day, and it usually goes to one parent, with the other granted access (time with the child). Sole custody is the exception, reserved for cases involving abuse, neglect, or a complete breakdown in co-parenting.

For Muslim families, custody (hadhanah) is decided in the Syariah Court under different rules, which I cover in my guide to the best Muslim child custody lawyers in Singapore.

Do I need a lawyer for my divorce in Singapore?

Legally, no. You can represent yourself in a divorce proceeding in Singapore. However, I would strongly recommend engaging a lawyer for several reasons:

  • The process is complex. Singapore divorce law involves the Women's Charter, the Family Justice Courts, and potentially the Administration of Muslim Law Act (AMLA) for Muslim marriages. Missing a procedural step can delay your case by months.
  • Ancillary matters require negotiation. Custody, care and control, access arrangements, maintenance, and division of matrimonial assets all involve legal principles that a trained lawyer can navigate far more effectively than a layperson.
  • Mistakes are costly. A poorly drafted consent order or a missed deadline can have lasting consequences on your rights and your children's welfare.
  • Affordable options exist. As this list shows, several firms provide packages starting from under $1,000 for uncontested cases. Free initial consultations are common across most firms.

If cost is genuinely a barrier, the Legal Aid Bureau provides means-tested legal assistance, and the Law Society Pro Bono Services can assess whether you qualify for subsidised or free legal representation. But for most people, the investment in a qualified divorce lawyer pays for itself in better outcomes and peace of mind.

What is the difference between a contested and uncontested divorce in Singapore?

This is the single biggest factor in what your divorce will cost and how long it takes, so it is worth understanding before you call any firm. An uncontested divorce means both spouses agree on everything: the reason for the divorce and all the ancillary matters (custody, care and control, access, maintenance, and division of matrimonial assets). These are faster, cheaper, and often handled on fixed-fee packages.

A contested divorce means you disagree on one or more of those issues and need the court to decide. This involves affidavits, hearings, and sometimes a full trial, which is where costs climb and timelines stretch past a year. Many cases start contested and settle along the way through mediation at the Family Justice Courts. When matching a firm to your situation, ask honestly which camp you are likely in, because the strongest mediator is not always the strongest litigator.

Can I change my divorce lawyer midway through the case?

Yes. You are free to change lawyers at any stage, and it is more common than people think, usually because of poor communication or a mismatch in approach. The practical considerations are cost and timing. Your new firm needs to review the file and get up to speed, which takes time and money, and a change close to a hearing date can cause delays.

If you are unhappy, it is worth raising your concerns with the current firm first, since many issues come down to communication rather than competence. But you are never locked in. This is exactly why I weight responsiveness and clear communication so heavily in the list above: getting the right fit at the start saves you the cost of switching later.

Need a website for your law firm?

If you run a legal practice and your website is not generating the leads it should, I can help. I design and build websites for professional firms across Singapore. A well-designed law firm website does more than look good; it builds trust, ranks on Google, and converts visitors into consultations.

Check out my law firm web design or get a free quote to see how I can help your firm stand out online.

I hope this guide helps you find the best divorce lawyer in Singapore for your situation. If you found it helpful, keep an eye out for more instalments in the Terris Recommends series. For the full picture, see my guide to the best law firms in Singapore. For related family matters, I also cover the best Syariah divorce lawyers, the best Muslim lawyers, and, once assets and estates come into play, the best wills and probate lawyers and the best conveyancing lawyers in Singapore. I also cover the best service providers across Singapore, from phone repair shops to interior designers.

Editorial note: This guide reflects my own research and opinion, not legal advice. I am a Singapore web designer, not a lawyer. Firm details, fees, Google ratings, and rankings were accurate at the time of writing (last updated July 2026) but can change. Always confirm fees and a lawyer's current standing directly with the firm before engaging them.
