Do I need an interior designer for a BTO, or just a contractor?
It depends on how much design help you want. A renovation contractor executes the works, hacking, tiling, carpentry, electrical, but usually without a dedicated design service. An interior design firm plans the look, layout and carpentry, then manages the trades to deliver it. For a first BTO, most people benefit from a firm that does both, because the layout and built-in decisions are where a flat is won or lost. Whichever you choose, the firm doing the physical works must be on the HDB register of renovation contractors.
When should I engage an interior designer for my BTO?
Earlier than most people think. I would start meeting firms two to three months before key collection, so you can compare quotes, lock in a designer and have works begin soon after you get the keys. Good BTO firms book up, especially around major key-collection periods, so leaving it until after collection often means waiting weeks for a slot. Getting your quotes and design direction sorted early also spreads out the decisions rather than cramming them into a stressful few weeks.
How long does a BTO renovation take?
For a typical BTO, the renovation itself usually runs about 8 to 12 weeks once works start, on top of a few weeks for design finalisation and material selection. Heavy custom carpentry, imported materials or a larger flat can push it longer. Build in a buffer and do not schedule your move-in for the exact day the renovation is promised to finish, because a week or two of slippage is common even with good firms.
Is CaseTrust accreditation important for a BTO renovation?
It is a strong plus, especially for first-timers. CaseTrust-RCMA accredited firms must use a standard renovation contract and provide deposit protection, which matters when you are paying a firm in stages for a flat that does not exist yet. It is not the only thing that makes a firm good, plenty of excellent designers focus on portfolio and reviews, but if you want the extra financial safety net, prioritise an accredited firm.
