Finding the best car insurance in Singapore is less about one perfect insurer and more about comparing properly, because premiums for the exact same car can vary by hundreds of dollars between providers. So I researched the market, the value insurers, the established names and the comparison platforms, and put together this guide to help you both pick a provider and understand what actually drives your premium.

The most important habit is simple: always compare at least three quotes before you buy or renew. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive quote for one car can top S$500 a year, which is pure money left on the table if you auto-renew without checking. Comparison platforms make this quick, and I have included the two best alongside the individual insurers worth knowing.

This is a spoke in my Terris Recommends Automotive series. It pairs naturally with my guides to the best car workshops and best car spray painting workshops in Singapore, since your insurer decides where you can get repairs done. For cover, here are the nine options I would look at. Note that this is general information, not financial advice.

01

What I look for in car insurance in Singapore

The cheapest premium is not automatically the best policy. Here is what I weigh when judging car insurance.

  • The all-in price for your profile. Premiums depend heavily on your age, driving experience, car and NCD, so a quote is personal. Always compare quotes for your exact profile, not headline advertised rates.
  • Excess, including any excess waiver. The excess is what you pay per claim. A low premium with a high excess can be worse value than a slightly higher premium with a low or waived excess. Read this number carefully.
  • Authorised versus any workshop. Authorised-workshop plans are cheaper but restrict repairs to the insurer's approved shops. Any-workshop plans cost more but let you choose. Pick based on how much that freedom matters to you.
  • NCD protection. Your No-Claim Discount is valuable, and an NCD Protector add-on shields it from your first claim. For anyone with a high NCD, this is often worth having.
  • Add-ons that matter to you. Roadside assistance, a transport allowance while your car is in the workshop, and coverage for driving into Malaysia are all worth checking if you need them.
  • Claims reputation and service. A cheap policy is no bargain if claims are painful. Look at how each insurer handles claims, because that is when the policy actually matters.

One reassurance: every legitimate motor insurer here is regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and the industry operates under frameworks set by the General Insurance Association of Singapore, including the Motor Claims Framework that governs what to do after an accident. So the choice is about value and service, not legitimacy.

How car insurance works in Singapore: NCD, excess and workshops

Three things shape what you pay and what you get, and understanding them is what lets you buy well.

  • No-Claim Discount (NCD). For every claim-free year you earn 10% off, up to a maximum of 50%. It is one of the biggest levers on your premium. The catch: one at-fault claim can cut your NCD by around 30%, unless you have bought an NCD Protector, which shields your first claim in a policy year.
  • Excess. The fixed amount you pay towards each own-damage claim, often around S$500 to S$600 as standard, sometimes higher for young or inexperienced drivers. Some insurers offer an excess waiver on your first claim or two, which is genuinely valuable.
  • Authorised versus any workshop. Authorised-workshop plans require you to repair at the insurer's approved workshops and are cheaper. Any-workshop plans let you use your preferred workshop but cost more. If you have a trusted workshop or drive a Continental car, the any-workshop freedom may be worth the premium.

The level of cover matters too. Comprehensive covers your own car as well as third parties, third-party fire and theft adds those perils to basic liability, and third-party only is the legal minimum. For most cars worth insuring properly, comprehensive is the sensible choice, and the real decision is which insurer and which options.

1. Budget Direct Insurance

Budget Direct is where I would start if your priority is price, because it is consistently among the cheapest on headline comprehensive quotes. It advertises comprehensive cover from around S$526 a year for the right profile, against a market average closer to S$1,000, which is a substantial saving for drivers who fit its pricing.

It keeps costs down with a direct, app-based model and no agents, and it lets you choose a higher excess to bring the premium down further if you are comfortable with that trade-off. Claims are handled through the app rather than an intermediary, which suits people who would rather manage things digitally than deal with a middleman.

For a value-focused driver with a clean record, Budget Direct is often the cheapest starting point, though as always you should compare its quote for your exact profile against the others here.

Next: 2. DirectAsia

2. DirectAsia

DirectAsia is my pick for drivers who want to tailor their plan, and it is especially popular with newer drivers looking to trim the base premium. Its whole proposition is customisation: you adjust the coverage and options so you only pay for what you actually need, which is genuinely useful when a standard policy includes things that do not apply to you.

It also scores well on service, with a customer satisfaction score reported above 90 percent, which exceeds the industry average. For a newer driver facing higher premiums, the ability to fine-tune the plan, combined with a direct model that cuts out agent costs, makes it a smart place to look for value without sacrificing service quality.

If you want a plan shaped to your situation rather than an off-the-shelf policy, DirectAsia is a strong, well-rated option to compare.

Next: 3. MSIG

3. MSIG

MSIG is the one I would look at if roadside support and workshop coverage matter to you. It is a long-standing motor insurer in Singapore with a network of more than thirty authorised workshops, and it is well regarded for its roadside assistance and emergency support, which is exactly what you want when something goes wrong far from home.

That established infrastructure is its strength. A large authorised-workshop network means more repair choice even on the cheaper authorised plans, and strong roadside support turns a breakdown from a crisis into an inconvenience. For drivers who value the practical, real-world side of an insurer over the last few dollars of premium, MSIG is a dependable choice.

For solid cover backed by good roadside assistance and a wide workshop network, MSIG is a reassuring, established option.

Next: 4. Income

4. Income

Income is my pick for the strength of its benefits and add-ons. Its private-car policy is notable for practical extras: an excess waiver that removes the standard excess on your first two own-damage claims, a daily transport allowance while your car is in the workshop, and an affordable roadside assistance and wellness rider covering non-accident breakdown costs.

Those benefits add up to real peace of mind. The excess waiver alone can save you hundreds at claim time, and a transport allowance keeps you mobile while your car is being repaired, which is exactly the kind of support that matters when you actually need to claim. As a well-established local insurer, it also brings a solid claims reputation.

For a driver who values comprehensive benefits and useful add-ons over the rock-bottom premium, Income is a strong, well-rounded choice.

Next: 5. Singlife

5. Singlife

Singlife earns its place as one of the more competitively priced mainstream insurers, regularly appearing among the cheapest in published comparisons alongside the value specialists. For drivers who want a keen premium from a recognised, broad-based insurer rather than a pure budget brand, it hits a useful middle ground.

The appeal is getting a competitive rate without feeling like you have gone entirely no-frills. As a large insurer with a wide product range, Singlife pairs its pricing with the reassurance of an established company, which some drivers prefer to a purely direct-only budget option. As always, the right choice depends on how its quote for your car compares.

For a competitively priced policy from a well-known insurer, Singlife is worth including whenever you compare quotes.

Next: 6. AIG

6. AIG

AIG is my pick for a globally reputable insurer with flexible plan options. As one of the most established insurance names in the world, it is a trusted choice in Singapore, and its range includes options like a collision-only plan that provides focused coverage for collision damage, hit-and-run and fire, which can suit drivers who want targeted rather than fully comprehensive cover.

The value here is the combination of a strong global reputation and plan flexibility. For drivers who prioritise the security of a major international insurer, or who want a specific type of coverage rather than a one-size policy, AIG offers both. That flexibility to match the plan to your actual risk is a genuine advantage.

For reputable cover with flexible options, AIG is a solid insurer to weigh against the others when you compare.

Next: 7. Sompo

7. Sompo

Sompo rounds out the individual insurers as a solid, established all-rounder. As a well-known general insurer in Singapore, it offers dependable comprehensive motor cover, and it is a sensible name to include in any comparison rather than assuming the cheapest headline brand is automatically right for you.

The case for a broad, established insurer like Sompo is consistency: reliable cover and claims handling from a company with a long presence in the market. For drivers who want a straightforward, reputable policy and are less focused on chasing the absolute lowest premium, it is a steady choice that belongs on the shortlist.

For dependable all-round cover from an established name, Sompo is worth a quote alongside the value specialists.

Next: 8. MoneySmart

8. MoneySmart

MoneySmart is my pick for actually doing the comparison, and I would use it before committing to any single insurer above. It is a comparison platform that lets you see quotes from multiple providers in one place, which is the single most effective way to make sure you are not overpaying, given how much premiums vary between insurers for the same car.

The value of a comparison platform is that it turns the tedious job of getting several quotes into a few minutes. Rather than filling in your details on five different insurer websites, you enter them once and see the market, often with sign-up promotions on top. It is the practical tool that makes the compare-three-quotes rule easy to follow.

Whichever insurer you lean towards, run your details through MoneySmart first to benchmark the price and make sure you are getting a fair deal.

9. SingSaver

SingSaver is the other comparison platform I would use, and a strong complement to MoneySmart. It lets you compare car insurance quotes and promotions across providers, and it is frequently cited as the place to start a comparison with insurers like Singlife, MSIG, DirectAsia and Budget Direct, precisely the value names worth checking.

Running your profile through more than one comparison platform is worthwhile because their panels and promotions differ, so one may surface a better deal or sign-up offer than the other. Given the potential for a S$500-plus swing between quotes, the few extra minutes to check both platforms is time very well spent.

Use SingSaver alongside MoneySmart to make sure you have seen the full picture before you buy or renew your car insurance.

How much does car insurance cost in Singapore?

Premiums are highly personal, driven by your age, experience, car and NCD, but as a guide for 2026:

Driver / coverTypical annual premium (2026)
Cheapest comprehensive (good profile)From around S$526 to S$730
Average comprehensiveAround S$1,000 to S$1,200
New or young driverOften S$1,500 to S$3,000+
NCD Protector add-onA small extra on the premium
Standard excess per claimOften around S$500 to S$600

The single biggest factor you control is comparison: the same driver and car can see a gap of over S$500 a year between insurers. Your NCD and excess choices move the number too. Always compare at least three quotes for your exact profile, and weigh the excess and add-ons, not just the premium.

14

How I put this list together

These are my own independent picks, not a paid directory, and this is general information rather than financial advice. I looked at the providers and tools that matter for a car owner buying or renewing cover: value insurers with consistently competitive premiums, established names with strong benefits and service, and the comparison platforms that let you check the whole market. I weighted price competitiveness, the quality of benefits like excess waivers and NCD protection, and claims reputation.

Because premiums are so personal, the list is designed to give you a strong shortlist to compare rather than a single answer, since the best policy genuinely depends on your profile. Details are checked at the time of writing and change with the market. Always compare current quotes for your own car and driver profile, and read the policy terms, before you buy.

Which is the cheapest car insurance in Singapore?

In recent published comparisons, Budget Direct, Singlife and MSIG have frequently been among the cheapest for comprehensive cover, with Budget Direct advertising from around S$526 a year for the right profile. But the cheapest insurer for you depends entirely on your age, car, driving experience and NCD, so the only reliable way to find your cheapest option is to compare quotes for your exact profile.

Next: How does No-Claim Discount (NCD) work?
16

How does No-Claim Discount (NCD) work?

You earn 10% off your premium for each claim-free year, up to a maximum of 50%. It is one of the biggest factors in your premium. However, one at-fault claim can reduce your NCD by around 30% at renewal, unless you have bought an NCD Protector add-on, which shields your NCD from your first claim in a policy year. For anyone with a high NCD, that protector is often worth it.

17

What is the difference between an authorised workshop and any workshop plan?

An authorised-workshop plan requires you to have repairs done at the insurer's approved workshops and is cheaper. An any-workshop plan lets you choose your own workshop but costs more. If you have a trusted workshop, or drive a Continental car you want repaired by a marque specialist, the any-workshop freedom can be worth the higher premium. Otherwise, the authorised plan saves money.

Next: Should I claim insurance or pay for minor damage myself?
18

Should I claim insurance or pay for minor damage myself?

For minor damage, often not. Making a claim usually costs you your No-Claim Discount, which can be up to 50%, and raises future premiums. If the repair is below your excess (often S$500 to S$600) plus the value of the NCD you would lose, paying directly is usually cheaper overall. For significant damage, claiming makes sense. An NCD Protector changes this calculation in your favour.

19

How can I lower my car insurance premium in Singapore?

Compare at least three quotes, since the same cover can vary by over S$500 between insurers. Build and protect your NCD, consider a higher excess if you are a careful driver, choose an authorised-workshop plan if you do not need workshop freedom, and only pay for add-ons you actually need. Using comparison platforms like MoneySmart and SingSaver makes finding the best rate for your profile far quicker.

Need a website for your insurance or motor business

Car insurance is bought after research and comparison, and increasingly online. If you are an insurer, broker or motor business and your website is slow, confusing or hard to get a quote from, you lose customers to competitors who make comparing and buying effortless.

I design and build fast, search-optimised websites for Singapore businesses, with the local SEO and clear quote and enquiry flows that turn research into customers. If your website is not converting the traffic it gets, that is usually the cheapest growth available to you.

Ready to talk? Get a quote here and tell me about your business, and I will give you a straight answer on what would actually move the needle.

The best car insurance in Singapore for you is whichever gives the best value for your specific profile, which is why comparing matters more than any single recommendation. For the cheapest headline quotes, start with Budget Direct, Singlife and MSIG. For strong benefits, Income stands out, and for tailored plans, DirectAsia is excellent. Whichever you lean towards, run your details through MoneySmart and SingSaver first.

Above all, compare at least three quotes, protect your NCD, and weigh the excess and add-ons rather than just the premium. This is general information, not financial advice.
