10 Best English Tuition Centres in Singapore (November 2026)
English tuition in Singapore: 10 centres compared for PSLE English, composition and O-Level or SEC English, with 2027 fees, class sizes and dated results.
1 Lil' but Mighty Best for English-only classes of six
Why it's No. 1 This guide is part of Terris Recommends, my researched, hands-on picks of the best local businesses and services in Singapore. Every recommendation is researched and ranked by me.
See all recommendationsPSLE English changed format in 2025, and it's worth knowing its new shape before you pay for English tuition in Singapore. Under SEAB's current format, the two pieces of writing together are worth 25% of the grade, the oral is worth 20%, and the long language and comprehension paper is worth 45%. A centre that spends every lesson on model compositions is working on a quarter of the exam.
I compared 10 English tuition centres the way I'd want to before paying a deposit: fee pages for 2026 and 2027, class sizes, levels, and results with a year attached. Half are English or writing specialists. The rest are bigger centres with a strong English programme, from neighbourhood outlets at S$200 a month to a premium chain at three times that. Every fee and result comes from the centre's own site in November 2026.
The list runs from Primary 1 to Sec 4, with a short stop for JC General Paper. If your child needs help in more than one subject, my guide to tuition centres in Singapore covers the multi-subject chains, and I've written separate guides to maths tuition, science tuition and Chinese tuition.
| Centre | Best for | Levels | Class size | Fees |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lil' but Mighty | English only, in classes of six | P1 to Sec 4 | Up to 6 | S$414 to S$501 a month incl. GST (2026) |
| The Alternative Story | PSLE English and creative writing, with 2025 results | P1 to Sec 4 | Not published | S$78.50 to S$98 a lesson before GST (2027) |
| Writers Studio | PSLE composition with former MOE teachers | K2 to Sec 4, IP | 6 to 8, up to 10 at weekends | On enquiry |
| The Writer's Place | Creative writing only, in Woodlands and Bukit Panjang | P1 to P6 | Not published | On enquiry |
| The Write Connection | Writing enrichment close to home | K2 to Sec 4 | Not published | S$65 to S$105 a lesson incl. GST |
| Illum.e | Secondary and IP English, then GP | Primary to JC | Average of 8 | S$80 to S$90 a secondary lesson; primary S$55 to S$115 before GST |
| The Learning Lab | A structured premium programme | N2 to JC | 10 to 13 | S$575.52 to S$719.40 a month incl. GST (2026-27) |
| Mind Stretcher | PSLE English at a mid-range price | Pre-primary to Sec 4 | 8 to 10 on average | S$228.90 to S$316.10 a month incl. GST (2027) |
| EduFirst Learning Centre | Small, low-cost classes in HDB towns | Nursery to Sec 5 | 4 to 8 | S$200 to S$320 a month before GST (2027) |
| Academia | English, Literature and GP with specialist teachers | P1 to JC, IB | Focus classes 4 to 6 | On enquiry; S$115 registration |
Monthly fees are for four lessons, as each centre published them in November 2026. "Incl. GST" or "before GST" follows the way each one states its own price, and the fee table further down lines them up at P5 and P6 and at Sec 3 and 4.
PSLE English is marked out of 200 across four papers: Writing is 25% of the grade, Language Use and Comprehension 45%, Listening Comprehension 10% and Oral Communication 20%. That's the format in SEAB's PSLE English syllabus (0001), first examined in 2025. The total is then turned into an Achievement Level from AL1 to AL8, which adds to the four-subject PSLE Score.
| Paper | What's in it | Marks | Weighting | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Writing | Situational writing (14 marks) and a composition of at least 150 words on a topic with three pictures (36 marks) | 50 | 25% | 1 h 10 min |
| 2. Language Use and Comprehension | 25 multiple-choice and 50 open-ended questions, from grammar and cloze to synthesis and comprehension | 90 | 45% | 1 h 50 min |
| 3. Listening Comprehension | 20 multiple-choice questions, each text read twice | 20 | 10% | About 35 min |
| 4. Oral Communication | Reading a passage aloud (15 marks) and a conversation with the examiners about a photo (25 marks) | 40 | 20% | About 10 min, plus 5 min to prepare |
So Paper 2 carries almost half the grade, and its open-ended comprehension is worth 20 marks on its own. The photo conversation is worth 25 marks, more than the whole listening paper. And the composition, the part most centres advertise, is 36 marks out of 200. A good primary English class works on all of it; a writing-only class is an add-on.
That matters more in English than in most subjects, because writing and oral improve when a teacher reads a child's work closely every week. Lessons are two hours. P1 and P2 are taught on-site only, and from P3 there are Zoom classes too. It also sells composition marking on its own, useful if your child needs more feedback between lessons. Its nine branches run from Clementi and Bukit Batok to Tampines, Hougang and Upper Thomson.
Its 2026 fees include GST: S$103.55 a lesson at P1 and P2, rising to S$125.35 at Sec 3 and 4, or S$414.20 to S$501.40 for four lessons. The deposit is four weeks of fees, registration is S$21.80, and the first two-hour trial class is free. It joined the Franchising and Licensing Association in 2026, so ask who will teach your child's class. And it doesn't publish results, the one gap I'd want filled.

Primary classes are split by stage: P3 and P4 work on comprehension and creative writing, and P5 and P6 prepare for both PSLE written papers, with mid-term reviews and mock exams from P3. Secondary classes cover every part of the paper, from essays to the oral. Its four centres are at Tampines Junction, Djitsun Mall in Ang Mo Kio, Parkway Centre and Beauty World Centre, plus a fully online class.
Its 2027 fees are per lesson, before GST: S$78.50 at P1 and P2, rising to S$84.50 at P5 and P6 and S$98 at secondary, with materials included. A term is 10 to 13 lessons, and new students pay S$80 to register plus an S$80 refundable deposit. It doesn't publish a class size, and one parent review describes a fairly large class, so ask. There's a free online trial.

Its main primary programme, STELLAR, covers the composition, Paper 2 and the oral, with oral practice from P1. Around it sit a creative writing track, PSLE composition intensives, and oral and comprehension clinics. It carries on into secondary and IP English, and it also prepares children for the AEIS, which I cover in my AEIS preparation guide.
For 2025 it says more than 80% of its PSLE students improved by one to three grades, and 87% of the O-Level students it tracked through the full programme scored A1 or A2. The O-Level figure covers a selected group, so ask how many students that was. It has two centres, at Beauty World Centre and in Kovan, and fees are on enquiry.

Each level has its own course, from Foundation Writers at P1 to PSLE Mastery Writers at P6. It publishes a named list of its 2025 PSLE students and their English grades: 19 at AL1, 28 at AL2 and 7 at AL3. It doesn't say how many sat the exam, so read that as a roll of honour rather than a rate. Still, it's dated and in the current format, which is more than most centres offer.
All three centres are in the north-west, two in Woodlands and one at Junction 10 in Bukit Panjang. Fees aren't on the site, so ask for the term fee and class size at the free assessment.

It opened in 2012, using a method it says was developed in Sydney in 2002, and runs classes from K2 to secondary, plus debate for primary pupils. It posts a PSLE honour roll each year, most recently for 2025, but as images with no percentages, so ask for figures.
Its fee page, under the 2027 registration menu, lists prices per lesson including GST: S$65 for a 1.5-hour K2 lesson on a weekday, S$80 to S$90 for two hours at primary and S$100 at secondary, with weekend lessons S$5 more, collected by the term. Registration is S$85, the refundable deposit S$100 and materials S$12.50 a term. Each branch has its own WhatsApp line, so contact the one you'd use.

Lessons use what it calls thinking frames, step-by-step structures for each question type, across all four secondary papers. For AY2025 it says its P6 cohort scored 47% AL1 or AL2 and 76% AL1 to AL4, and that all its IP4 students scored an A. Its O-Level figure, 98% at B3 or better, is older, from 2021 and 2022.
Secondary lessons cost S$80 (lower) and S$90 (upper) for two hours; that page doesn't say whether GST is added. Primary is quoted before GST, from S$55 for 1.5 hours at P1 and P2 to S$115 for three hours at P5 and P6, since upper primary lessons grew to three hours in 2026. It also teaches JC General Paper, so a student can stay with one centre from Sec 1 to the A-Levels.

Lessons mix comprehension, composition and oral with word games and debates. Classes are 10 at P1, 12 from P2 to P6 and 13 at secondary, and online classes run from P3 to Sec 4. For PSLE 2025 it says more than 60% of its students scored AL1 or AL2 in the subjects they took with it, though it doesn't give an English-only figure.
It's also the most expensive centre here. For 2026-27 a weekday class costs S$575.52 a month at P1 to P4, S$634.40 at P5 and P6 and S$667.08 at secondary, including GST, with weekend slots about S$50 more, billed by the term. Add S$98.10 to register and a S$150 deposit. If English is the only gap, a specialist above costs less; for English, Maths and Science together, see my tuition centres guide.

It teaches English alongside Maths, Science and Chinese, from pre-primary to Sec 4. For PSLE 2025 it reports two in three students scoring AL1 or AL2 in their Mind Stretcher subjects; at O-Level 2025, 78% scored an A in their Mind Stretcher subjects. Those figures cover every subject, not English alone. Classes average 8 to 10 students, and with more than 25 centres there's usually one nearby.
There's no free trial: one trial lesson costs S$70 plus GST. Registration is S$76.30, and a second subject is 10% off. Teaching can vary between branches, so sit in at the one you'd use.

Primary English rises to S$240 a month at P5 and P6, and secondary costs S$300 to S$320, each for four 1.5-hour lessons before GST. Materials and exam papers are free, there's a free trial class, and online classes run from P3. Its secondary English materials were written by a retired vice-principal with more than 35 years in education.
Two cautions. Its results page holds individual stories from 2010 to 2015, nothing current. And its secondary English page still lists reading aloud in the oral, which the current O-Level and the 2027 SEC don't include; the oral is now a planned response to a video clip, then a discussion. Ask how the classes prepare for that.

The teachers are the reason to go. Academia was founded in 2013 by Johann Loh, a Princeton philosophy graduate, and its GP programme is run by Dr Neil Coomber, who has an Oxford PhD and taught GP at Raffles Institution for five years. It says more than half of its graduating P6 students have scored AL1 in English since AL scoring began, without a year-by-year figure.
It's one location, so the commute decides a lot. Fees are billed by the term of about 12 weeks and quoted on enquiry. Registration is S$115, and paying for the whole year by week six of Term 1 takes 8% off. From 2027 its larger Core classes and its Focus classes share one fee tier, so check which you're being offered.

These came close. Each is worth a trial if it's near you or fits a particular need.
- Writers At Work (writersatwork.com.sg): English only from Pre-Primary to Sec 4 at eight centres, with a separate composition programme for P4 to P6. Four two-hour lessons cost S$392.40 to S$545 including GST. Its published results table stops at 2019, so ask for recent figures.
- The Learning Board (thelearningboard.com.sg): English from P4 to Sec 4 at Toa Payoh, Hougang and Kembangan, with a synthesis and transformation workshop. Registration is S$40, with no deposit or materials fee; monthly fees are on enquiry.
- Cher's Tuition (cherstuition.com): live online O-Level English in small classes, for a Sec 3 or 4 student who'd rather not travel. It says all its 2024 students passed.
- Lorna Whiston Schools (lornawhiston.com): English enrichment and phonics at United Square, Marine Parade and Greenwich, plus the speech and drama programme in my speech and drama classes guide. Fees are on enquiry.
Less than most parents expect. The 2027 SEC English paper at G3, the level that replaces the O-Level, has the same four papers, marks and timings as the 2026 O-Level paper: SEAB's G3 English syllabus (K300) matches the O-Level syllabus (1184) section for section, and SEAB lists 1184 as the code K300 replaces. SEAB says there's no change in the overall standard of the exams.
| Paper | What's in it | Marks | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Writing (1 h 50 min) | Editing (10 marks), situational writing of 250 to 350 words (30), continuous writing of 350 to 500 words on one of four topics (30) | 70 | 35% |
| 2. Comprehension (1 h 50 min) | Two short texts, one visual (5 marks), a narrative (20), and a non-narrative text with an 80-word summary (25) | 50 | 35% |
| 3. Listening (about 45 min) | Listening tasks heard twice (22 marks) and a note-taking task heard once (8) | 30 | 10% |
| 4. Oral (about 20 min, including 10 min to prepare) | A planned response to a video clip (15 marks), then a discussion with the examiners (15), on a computer | 30 | 20% |
What does change is around the paper. Subjects are taken at G1, G2 or G3, and G2 and G1 English have their own syllabuses (K200 and K100). The written English and Mother Tongue papers are held in September, with the oral and listening before them, and results come out the following January. The first cohort is the students who entered Sec 1 in 2024, today's Sec 3s.
So be wary of a brand-new "SEC English" course at G3. Ask instead whether a centre teaches the computer-based oral and the argument option in continuous writing, and whether its Sec 4 revision is planned around a September exam.
At JC, English becomes General Paper: argument essays on current issues and a comprehension paper. My GP picks are in my tuition centres guide; the short version is Indigo Education Group, whose GP classes start from five students, are co-taught by two tutors and write about 40 essays a year. Academia's GP programme is run by a former Raffles Institution GP teacher, and Illum.e says 97% of its A-Level students scored A or B in GP in 2021 and 2022. For JC maths, see my H2 maths tuition guide.
A creative writing class suits a child whose grammar and comprehension are fine but whose compositions are flat. Full English tuition suits a child also losing marks in Paper 2, which is worth 90 of the 200 marks against the composition's 36.
For writing alone, The Writer's Place teaches nothing else, The Write Connection runs writing enrichment from K2, and Writers Studio has a creative writing track. For the whole subject, Lil' but Mighty, The Alternative Story, Mind Stretcher and EduFirst teach every paper. If your child simply loves writing, my enrichment classes guide has options away from exams.
At secondary the picture changes. Continuous writing can include argument, and situational writing grows to 250 to 350 words. A primary-style creative writing class covers neither, so a secondary student usually needs a full English class.
Reading every day and talking about what was read help more than extra worksheets, because PSLE English tests a child on unseen texts in Paper 2 and on talking about a photo in the oral. These are the habits I'd build first.
- Read more than stories. Paper 2 includes a visual text, and the SEC comprehension paper adds a non-narrative text and a summary. Newspapers and non-fiction count.
- Read aloud for five minutes. It's 15 marks of the PSLE oral, and the easiest part to practise at home.
- Talk about pictures. The 25-mark oral conversation starts from a photo. Show your child one from the news and ask what's happening and what they would do.
- Collect words from their own reading. A word met in a book they enjoyed sticks better than a list of "good phrases" learnt by heart.
- Use the library. The National Library Board runs public libraries across the island, so a child can work through a whole series for free.
If your P1 child is struggling to read, talk to the school before paying for tuition. MOE's Learning Support Programme for English picks out children at the start of P1 and teaches them for half an hour a day in groups of 8 to 10, with trained teachers.
A list gets you to a shortlist. Here's how I'd make the final call.
- Find where the marks went. Look at your child's last exam paper by section. Weak compositions point to a writing class; weak Paper 2 or oral marks point to full English tuition.
- Ask how they teach the oral. The PSLE oral is reading aloud and a photo conversation; the secondary oral is a response to a video clip on a computer. A centre that can't describe either is behind.
- Ask for results with a year. "One in two at AL1 or AL2 in PSLE 2025" is a result. A results page of stories from 2015 isn't, and neither is a percentage with no year.
- Ask to see marked work. Written comments on compositions are what move an English grade. Ask for a sample of a marked script before you sign up.
- Ask the class size for your slot. Lil' but Mighty caps at six and Mind Stretcher averages 8 to 10. Both can work, but know which you're buying.
Before you pay, look the centre up on MOE's list of private schools. Any centre teaching 10 or more students has to be registered, and so do its teachers. Registration doesn't protect your fees, so pay by the term and read the refund clause.
I started from the centres that appear across the lists ranking for English tuition in Singapore, plus the English specialists in my tuition centres guide. Then I checked each one on its own website: fee schedule, branches, class sizes, levels, and results with a year attached. I favoured centres that publish fees and recent results in the current formats, said so where a centre doesn't, and dropped those I couldn't verify at the source. I haven't sat in on these classes, so treat the trial lesson as the final test. I update the list as fees and results change.
English tuition in Singapore costs about S$200 to S$685 a month at primary and S$295 to S$720 at secondary, for four group lessons a month in 2026 and 2027. EduFirst is the lowest published (S$200 before GST at P1 and P2) and The Learning Lab the highest (up to S$719.40 including GST).
| Centre | P5 and P6, a month | Sec 3 and 4, a month | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| EduFirst Learning Centre | S$240 | S$320 | 4 x 1.5 h, before GST (2027) |
| Mind Stretcher | S$272.50 | S$294.30 | 4 x 2 h weekday, incl. GST (2027) |
| The Alternative Story | S$338 | S$392 | 4 lessons, before GST (2027) |
| The Write Connection | S$360 to S$380 | S$400 to S$420 | 4 x 2 h, incl. GST |
| Illum.e | S$460 (3-hour lessons) | S$360 | 4 lessons; primary before GST, secondary not stated |
| Writers At Work | S$436 (P6) | S$545 | 4 x 2 h, incl. GST |
| Lil' but Mighty | S$457.80 | S$501.40 | 4 x 2 h, incl. GST (2026) |
| The Learning Lab | S$634.40 to S$684.52 | S$667.08 to S$719.40 | 4 lessons, incl. GST (2026-27) |
Writers Studio, The Writer's Place and Academia quote on enquiry. Home tutors charge by the hour: the rates tuition agencies such as Family Tutor list for 2026 run from about S$25 to S$90 an hour at primary and S$30 to S$105 at secondary, depending on whether the tutor is a student, full-time or a current or former MOE teacher.
A small group class suits most children learning English, because oral and discussion practice needs other voices, and a class of four to eight still gets close feedback on writing. A home tutor makes sense for a child who won't speak up in a group or needs one-to-one work on composition.
The cost gap is small. At the S$35 to S$60 an hour agencies list for a full-time primary tutor, four 1.5-hour lessons cost S$210 to S$360 a month. The difference is who checks the teacher: centres with 10 or more students, and their teachers, are registered with MOE, and a home tutor isn't, so ask for qualifications and references yourself.
Most children don't need English tuition before Primary 3. The usual reasons to start are a composition mark that hasn't moved by P4, weak Paper 2 marks in P5, or a child in P1 who still can't read fluently, which the school's Learning Support Programme should catch first.
For the PSLE, start at least a full school year before it, because writing and oral improve slowly. At secondary, Sec 3 is the natural point, since SEC English is written in September of Sec 4, before the rest of the exams.
Many English tuition centres in Singapore offer a free trial, but not all. On this list, Lil' but Mighty offers a free two-hour trial class, EduFirst a free trial class, The Alternative Story a free online trial and The Writer's Place a free assessment. Mind Stretcher charges S$70 plus GST for one trial lesson.
Use the trial to ask who will teach the class for the year, how big it is and how compositions are marked.
Parents compare English tuition centres late at night, three or four at a time, and quietly skip the one that looks dated or doesn't show up on Google. A centre with excellent teachers can lose enquiries every week to a slow website with no fees or results on it.
My guide to website design and SEO for tuition centres covers what moves enrolment. If your centre's site isn't pulling its weight, get in touch for a free consultation or see how I build websites for tuition centres.
The best English tuition in Singapore is the one that fixes the marks your child is actually losing. For close feedback in a class of six, Lil' but Mighty. For PSLE English with recent results, The Alternative Story. For compositions, Writers Studio or The Writer's Place, and for writing near home, The Write Connection. At secondary, Illum.e, and for a full programme, The Learning Lab if the budget allows and Mind Stretcher or EduFirst if it doesn't.
Whatever you choose, look at last term's paper first, book the trial at the branch you'd use, and pay by the term. Give it a full term, and ask your child how the lessons feel. A class they dread won't help much, whatever its results say.
For the other subjects, see my guides to tuition centres in Singapore, PSLE maths tuition and Chinese tuition.
