Google AI Overviews SEO in Singapore (October 2026)

How Singapore businesses get cited in Google AI Overviews: what Google's docs say, the new Search Console report, the opt-out switch, and what wastes money.

A laptop in a small Singapore corporate secretarial office, open on a blurred search results page with a summary block at the top, beside company forms and a cup of kopi

On 19 October 2026 I searched "how much does aircon servicing cost in singapore" on google.com.sg. Under the ads sat a paragraph Google had written itself, with a per-unit price range, a breakdown by service type and a panel of source cards. That's an AI Overview, and the businesses in those cards were named before I'd reached a single blue link.

I'm Terris, a web designer and SEO in Singapore, and checking who gets named in those cards is part of my monthly SEO work. This guide covers Google AI Overviews only. For ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity together, start with my generative engine optimisation guide.

Google added a Search Console report and an opt-out switch for these features in 2026, so I've checked everything below against Google's own pages and named studies as of October 2026.

What are Google AI Overviews, and when do they appear in Singapore?

Google AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries at the top of some Google results, with links to the pages that support the answer, and Singapore has had them since Google's late-2024 expansion. Google began rolling them out to more than 100 countries and territories on 28 October 2024, and a report on that expansion listed Singapore among the Asian markets. Google now puts the feature at over 2.5 billion monthly active users.

Google's AI Overviews help page lists Chinese (Simplified), Malay and Tamil among the supported languages alongside English, so Overviews can appear in all four of Singapore's main languages.

They don't show for every search, and Google's AI features documentation says they often don't trigger. Pew Research Center tracked US browsing in March 2025 and found an AI summary on 18% of Google searches. Only 8% of one- or two-word searches got one, against 53% of searches of ten words or more. The questions customers type out in full, like "how long does an aircon chemical wash take", are where Overviews tend to turn up.

Ads can now run inside AI Overviews in Singapore, in English, according to Google Ads Help. AI Mode, Google's chat-style search, can use different models and cite different links, so I cover it in my Gemini and AI Mode guide.

How does Google choose which pages an AI Overview cites?

Google chooses AI Overview sources with its normal Search ranking systems: it retrieves indexed pages for your question and for related questions it searches in the background, then links the pages that support each part of the answer. Google calls those background searches query fan-out. In its AI optimisation guide, a question about a weedy lawn also triggers searches about herbicides and weed prevention.

To be eligible, a page must be indexed and able to show a snippet. Your site also has to stay included in Search Console's Search generative AI setting, which is on by default.

Fan-out is why ranking first no longer decides who gets cited. Ahrefs found in July 2025 that 76% of cited pages ranked in the top 10 for the original search. Its March 2026 follow-up, covering 4 million cited URLs, put that figure at 37.9%, with 31% of cited URLs outside the top 100. Ahrefs says its method changed, so the figures aren't strictly comparable, and it links part of the drop to fan-out and to AI Overviews moving to Gemini 3 in January 2026.

My aircon search showed the same thing. The first two source cards were the pages ranking first and second underneath, both aircon companies' 2026 price guides with SGD tables. The third, cited for repair costs, was another aircon firm's repair guide that wasn't on page one at all, so my guess is that a fan-out search about repair prices found it.

So a page that answers one part of the question better than anyone else, such as what a chemical overhaul costs per unit in SGD, can be cited without ranking for the main term. Overviews also vary between people, devices and days, so treat any one search as a snapshot.

What does Google say you need to do to appear in AI Overviews?

Google says appearing in AI Overviews takes ordinary SEO and nothing extra: pages it can crawl and index, and content that adds something the rest of the web hasn't already said. Its guide to optimising for generative AI features, last updated in July 2026, says optimising for these features is still SEO. Its content advice comes down to this:

  • Write from first-hand experience. Google asks for a unique point of view and warns against generic listicles built on common knowledge. An aircon firm that explains what a gas top-up involves in a 30-year-old HDB flat has something a rewritten article can't copy.
  • Organise the page with clear paragraphs, sections and headings. Google says there's no ideal page length.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile and Merchant Center details current, so your services and products can appear in AI answers.

On the technical side, Google's AI features page asks for pages Googlebot can crawl, including through your CDN or hosting firewall, important content in text rather than images, and structured data that matches the visible page. My technical SEO checklist covers them. None of it guarantees a citation, and Google says that indexing and serving aren't guaranteed.

Do AI Overviews still send clicks to Singapore websites?

AI Overviews send fewer clicks to websites than plain results did, according to studies by Pew Research Center, Ahrefs and Seer Interactive, but businesses cited inside an Overview tend to get more clicks than those left out. None of the three uses Singapore data, so read them as direction rather than local numbers.

  • Pew tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025. With an AI summary on the page, they clicked a normal result on 8% of visits, against 15% of visits without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits (Pew, July 2025).
  • Ahrefs compared desktop click-through rates for 300,000 keywords in December 2023 and December 2025. Where an Overview showed, the top-ranking page's click-through rate was about 58% below Ahrefs' modelled projection for the same keywords without one (Ahrefs, February 2026).
  • Seer Interactive studied 3,119 informational queries across 42 organisations from June 2024 to September 2025. Organic click-through rate on queries with an Overview fell from 1.76% to 0.61%. In the third quarter of 2025, brands cited in the Overview got 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands that weren't, though Seer can't prove the citation caused it (as reported by PPC Land).

Google says clicks from pages with Overviews are higher quality. Maybe so, but once the Overview shows the SGD range, many readers of a price page have what they came for. On information searches, aim to be the named source. Where the reader still has to act, like booking a servicing slot, make sure the page they land on makes that step easy.

How do AI Overviews handle local searches like "aircon servicing near me"?

For "near me" and "service plus place" searches, Google still leans on the map pack and Google Business Profiles, while AI Overviews mostly answer the questions around a service, such as costs and how-tos. DAC, a media agency, analysed 739 results pages across four industries in a study published in August 2025. Searches containing "near me" brought up a map pack every time and an AI Overview never. "Oil change cost" got an Overview, while "mechanic near me" got the map.

The layout keeps moving, though. When I searched "aircon servicing near me" on 19 October 2026, I got ads, then the map pack, then a collapsed AI Overview asking what type of service and how many units I needed. In DAC's sample the two features rarely shared a page, and when they did the Overview came first. In my search the map came first.

That gives a local business two jobs. The map pack runs on your Google Business Profile: categories, reviews, photos and a service area that matches where you work. The Overview draws on your website's answers to what people ask before they book, which for most Singapore trades means SGD prices, what's included and how long the job takes. My local SEO service covers both.

Are health, finance and legal searches treated differently?

Google treats health, finance and other high-stakes searches with extra caution, so AI Overviews appear less often on them, and government pages compete hard for the citations when they do appear. Liz Reid, Google's VP of Search, wrote in May 2024 that Google had added triggering refinements for health queries and aims not to show Overviews on hard news. In January 2026, after a Guardian investigation, Google removed Overviews from searches for the normal range of liver blood tests, TechCrunch reported, though close variants still produced summaries.

In DAC's sample, only 3% of financial services and insurance searches showed an Overview, the lowest of its four industries. Pew found that .gov sites made up 6% of the sources in AI summaries, against 2% of the sources in normal results.

My Singapore test fitted that pattern. For "best way to register a company in singapore", the Overview split its answer by residency: citizens and PRs can file online through ACRA's BizFile+, while foreigners need a corporate service provider. Two of the first three source cards were government portals, Bizfile and GoBusiness, and the third was a 2026 guide from the payments company Wise. ACRA's own page ranked first underneath.

If you run a clinic, a financial advisory firm or a law practice, don't try to beat the regulator on the basic rules. Write what the regulator's page can't: what a first consultation involves and costs in SGD, how long the process takes, and the professional's name and licence.

Which controls keep content out of AI Overviews, and which don't?

The controls that limit or remove your content from AI Overviews are noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet, data-nosnippet and the Search generative AI setting in Search Console, and blocking Google-Extended isn't one of them. Google-Extended is a robots.txt token for Gemini model training and for grounding in the Gemini apps and Vertex AI. Google's crawler documentation says it has no effect on Search inclusion or ranking.

ControlWhat it doesEffect on AI Overviews
robots.txt Disallow for GooglebotStops Google crawling the pageNothing to quote, and normal Search loses the page too
noindexKeeps the page out of Google SearchOut of AI Overviews with everything else
nosnippetNo text snippet anywhere in SearchThe content isn't used as a direct input for AI Overviews or AI Mode
max-snippet:[number]Caps how long a snippet can beLimits how much of the page can be used as a direct input
data-nosnippet (on an HTML element)Hides that passage from snippetsListed by Google among the controls that limit what Search shows
Google-Extended (robots.txt)Limits Gemini training and grounding in Gemini apps and Vertex AINone
Search generative AI setting (Search Console)Include (the default) or Exclude your siteExclude takes your links, content and traffic out of AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's AI features within a few days

The nosnippet and max-snippet effects come from Google's robots meta tag documentation. Search Console Help says the new setting isn't a ranking signal for normal results, but read the whole page before you switch it off. Other sites' content keeps appearing in the Overview, and Google warns it may look similar to yours. For almost every Singapore SME, I'd leave it on Include.

What doesn't work for AI Overviews, or wastes money?

The AI Overview tactics that waste money are mostly ones Google now names in its own guide, including llms.txt files, chunking pages, rewriting for keyword variations and special schema. Google's AI optimisation guide says Google Search doesn't use llms.txt or other special files, so in Google they neither help nor hurt. If you made one for other AI tools, keep it. The guide also says AI features need no special schema.org markup. Structured data still earns rich results, so I keep adding it (my schema markup guide covers which types).

I'd also steer clear of these:

  • Mass town pages. Some businesses spin out "aircon servicing Tampines", "aircon servicing Woodlands" and 20 near-identical siblings. Google's guide warns that large numbers of pages aimed at query variations or fan-out queries can breach its scaled content abuse spam policy.
  • Bought or fake mentions. Google says inauthentic mentions don't help and its spam systems block manipulation.
  • Tools or agencies that promise placement. In Google's words, "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems." A tracker that records public answers is fine, but nobody outside Google can sell you a guaranteed Overview spot.
  • Blocking Google-Extended to stay out of Overviews. Google-Extended won't take you out of them. If you want out, use nosnippet or the Search Console setting and accept the lost traffic.

How can you check your AI Overview visibility yourself this week?

You can check your AI Overview visibility in about an hour: search your customers' real questions on google.com.sg, note who gets cited, then compare that with the Generative AI report in Search Console.

  1. Write down 10 to 15 questions your customers ask, in their words, price questions included. Add Mandarin or Malay versions if that's how they search.
  2. Search each one on google.com.sg in a private window. Note whether an Overview appears, which sites fill the first three source cards, and whether the map pack sits above it. Take dated screenshots, because Overviews change.
  3. Open the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. Google launched it on 3 June 2026 and rolled it out to all sites on 31 August 2026. It shows your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date, so you can look at Singapore on its own.
  4. Inspect important pages that never show up. The URL Inspection tool tells you whether Google can crawl and index them and whether a nosnippet tag is in the way. Google says changes to these controls can take days to months to register.
  5. Confirm the Search generative AI setting under Settings is on Include, especially if someone else set up your Search Console.

Search Console has limits, though:

  • The Generative AI report shows impressions only, with no clicks, queries or position (Search Console Help). Google says more metrics will come, and the report may not appear at all for a site with few AI impressions.
  • Clicks from AI Overviews are counted in the normal Performance report under the Web search type, mixed in with your other Web clicks.
  • An AI Overview counts as one position, and every link in it gets that same position (Google's Performance report definitions), so a cited page can show a better average position than its blue link earns.

How do I check Google AI Overviews for my SEO clients every month?

For every SEO client, I run the same set of customer questions through Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity every month and note which businesses get named. In month one, the client and I pick the questions their customers would type into an AI, worded the way they'd actually ask them. The set then stays the same, so you can compare one month's answers with the next.

With Google, some questions don't trigger an Overview at all, so I record that too. A question that stops showing an Overview means something different from losing your place in one to a competitor. The other three engines have their own guides: ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode, and Perplexity.

The monthly check is part of my SEO retainer, alongside the work that earns citations: letting Google and the AI crawlers reach your pages, schema that says who you are and where you work, and pages that answer their question in the first few lines. Nobody can guarantee that an AI engine will cite your business, and I don't promise it. What I can show you each month is whether you're being named.

Getting into Google AI Overviews is ordinary SEO aimed at the questions your customers type out in full. You need an indexed page that's allowed a snippet and answers in its first lines with real SGD numbers and first-hand detail, plus a Google Business Profile in order for the "near me" searches the map pack still owns.

Run your 10 questions on google.com.sg this week, screenshot who gets named, and set the Generative AI report beside your notes. If you'd rather I did that every month as part of your SEO, here's how my SEO retainer works.
