Creative Leadership

João Flores

João Flores is a creative leader who sells into boardrooms, which meant the site had to prove taste rather than describe it. We built four pages and almost no copy: a single-screen opening statement, a work page that runs fourteen pieces with no captions at all, and two short pages of principles. For this kind of client, what you leave out is the argument.

The Challenge

What They Were Facing

Personal sites for senior creatives fail in a predictable way. They over-explain. Long biographies, client logo walls, awards lists and a paragraph under every project, all of it quietly signalling that the work cannot speak on its own. The audience here is small, senior and sceptical, and they judge the site itself as a work sample before they read a word of it.

Problem 01

The Site Is the Portfolio Piece

When someone hires you for creative judgement, the website is not a description of your taste. It is a demonstration of it, being evaluated in real time. A generic template would have undercut the proposition on arrival.

Problem 02

Restraint Reads as Emptiness If You Get It Wrong

A near-black page with one line of text is either extremely confident or unfinished, and the difference is entirely in the execution: the typography, the timing, the exact amount of the portrait you let the darkness take.

Problem 03

Two Audiences With Opposite Expectations

Creative peers want to see the work with nothing in the way. Boardroom clients want to know there is a method behind it and that this person is safe to put in front of a board. Serving both without writing two sites is the actual brief.

Problem 04

No Room to Hide

On a four-page site with almost no copy, every element is load-bearing. There is no volume of content to average out a weak decision, which makes it a harder build than a fifty-page one.

Our Solution

How We Solved It

We built it as a statement rather than a document, and gave each audience its own page instead of compromising between them.

01 Solution 1 of 5

One Screen, One Sentence

The homepage is a single viewport: a black-and-white portrait emerging from pure black, the name, three nav items, and "Bringing Creativity Back To The Boardroom" set small at the bottom left. No scroll, no hero carousel, no scroll-prompt. The confidence of not filling the page is the first thing a visitor registers.

02 Solution 2 of 5

A Work Page That Says Nothing

Fourteen pieces running down a long page with no captions, no client names and no case study copy. For a creative director the work either lands or it does not, and annotating it would suggest otherwise.

03 Solution 3 of 5

Three Principles Instead of a Methodology

Human Craft, Creative Dimensions and Real-Time Hacks, one line each. It gives the boardroom buyer the evidence of a system without turning the site into a consultancy deck, and it is short enough that a sceptical reader finishes it.

04 Solution 4 of 5

Leadership Split Into Three Threads

News, Roar and Biography, each a separate route. It lets the press coverage, the point of view and the career history sit apart, so nobody has to scroll through a biography to reach the work or vice versa.

05 Solution 5 of 5

A Light Serif on Black, Held Quietly

Type set small and generously spaced against near-total darkness, with the portrait lit so it resolves out of the background rather than sitting on top of it. It is the whole design system, and on a site this spare that is the point.

Process

How We Got There

3 phases from kickoff to launch.

1

Direction

4 days

Agreed the central decision, that the site would be short and quiet, and worked out what each of the four pages had to carry as a result.

2

Design

1 week

Developed the black-and-white system, the type treatment, the portrait handling and the work page rhythm.

3

Build & Launch

3 days

Built and shipped in Framer, with responsive passes and launch.
